Georgiana (Keira Knightley) is going to get married to the Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes) and become a duchess. Her mother, Lady Spencer (Charlotte Rampling), has arranged this marriage. The Duke turns out to be unloving and cruel; all he wants from Georgiana is a boy to carry on his legacy. Georgiana then makes friends with Bess Foster (Hayley Atwell), whose spouse won’t let her see her kids. Bess moves in and the Duke takes her as his mistress. She needs him to help her gain access to her children again. Georgiana, in the meantime, has an affair with Charles Grey (Dominic Cooper).
