Everything Is Illuminated is the story of Jonathan (Elijah Wood), a neurotic Jewish American, who travels to Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandfather's life during World War II. Armed only with a photograph of the woman, her name, and the name of the village his grandfather lived in, Jonathan hires a tour company to assist him. The tour operator is a grumpy old man (Boris Leskin) who insists that he is blind, despite being the tour company's driver. He and his insane dog, Sammy Davis Junior, Junior, are joined by the old man's grandson, Alex (Eugene Hutz). Alex loves Americans and acts as translator for Jonathan's journey, which turns out to be more illuminating for all three men than any of them could have ever hoped.
