|
Everything Is Illuminated is the story of Jonathan (Elijah Wood), a neurotic Jewish American, who travels to Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandfather's life during World War II. Armed only with a photograph of the woman, her name, and the name of the village his grandfather lived in, Jonathan hires a tour company to assist him. The tour operator is a grumpy old man (Boris Leskin) who insists that he is blind, despite being the tour company's driver. He and his insane dog, Sammy Davis Junior, Junior, are joined by the old man's grandson, Alex (Eugene Hutz). Alex loves Americans and acts as translator for Jonathan's journey, which turns out to be more illuminating for all three men than any of them could have ever hoped.

The film sees four friends, Tommy Johnson (Danny Dyer), Billy Bright (Frank Harper), Fred (Tamer Hassan) and Zeberdee (Roland Manookian) who find a forgotten culture of Anglo Saxon males fed up with being told nothing they ever do is any good so their fists become drugs that make everything feel better. The Golden Compass is a wonderfully beautiful film in the theme of Narnia and Lord of the Rings. It tells the tale of a young orphan girl, Lyra (Dakota Blue Richards) who lives in an alternate universe where people's souls exist outside of their bodies in the form of some animal, called Deamons. Lyra, with the help of her shape-changing deamon, Pantalaimon, uncovers a tale of a magical substance called Dust, meets a beautiful mysterious woman (Nicole Kidman), and vows to save her friend Roger from the child napping Gobblers. Her quest leads her into the wild frozen north where she meets armored polar bears, slow-talking cowboys, witches and gypsies. It's a feast for the eyes and an excellent tale.
