Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell) is a one hit wonder, who has parlayed his success as a singer into owning and playing for a team in the American Basketball Association. The Flint Tropics are far from the best team, and Jackie is far from the best player or coach, but when it is announced that the ABA will merge with the NBA and that only four of the teams will become teams in the newly merged league, Jackie is determined to do something about it. Jackie gets a new player on the team who used to play for the Boston Celtics in Ed Monix (Woody Harrelson), and Jackie's friend Clarence Coffee Black (Andre Benjamin) also joins the team to increase there chances of being selected for the NBA. Jackie ramps up the antics in an attempt to win his team, and his friend Clarence, a place in the NBA.
