Tim (Ben Stiller) and Nick (Jack Black) are best friends and neighbors, and they are also co-workers at a boring and meaningless job at 3M company. Nick is always trying to think up crazy ideas to invent, when one day he hits upon the big idea, a spray that vaporizes dog poop. Who wouldn't want it right? Tim is too level-headed to have any part in the idea, but when Nick is successful in creating his invention his riches quickly escalate to monumental proportions, and Tim's envy escalates monumentally as well. Tryin to cope with his envy he meets a mysterious man in a bar, calling himself J-Man (Christopher Walken) he starts to advise Tim on what to do. Eventually even Tim's wife Debbie (Rachel Weisz) is angry at him for not going in on the venture. With both J-Man and his wife, and himself pushing him along he gets in to some crazy situations with his friend. Will his envy be both of their undoing?
